Penang set to become Bollywood location
Penang is looking to India’s film industry to boost the state’s tourism by selling itself as a filming destination. Penang's Convention and Exhibition Bureau chief executive officer Ashwin Gunasekeran is confident Penang will soon be able to hold its own against other scenic locations around the country.
Penang has already become a location for various films and television series.
The entire Channel 4 TV series, Indian Summers was filmed here as a stand-in for Simla. Shooting locations included Penang Hill and historic buildings in and around George Town, which share a similar British colonial architectural lineage.
The recent box office hit, Crazy Rich Asians also had various scenes shot on the island. The opening urban scenes set in London and the West Village were actually shot in Kuala Lumpur and Penang.
Expats looking for a vibrant city to move to should definitely consider Penang as the city is set to launch itself into modern filmmaking.
